Twitter Hidden Gems: 50 People You Should Follow but Have Never Heard of

March 9th, 2009 · Comments · Community, Twitter

Earlier this month, David Mullen had a great idea to create a Twitter starter pack on his blog (click here to go read the orignal post), that listed 50 people to start following in the areas of marketing, advertising, PR, and social media. Whether you’re new to Twitter or have been there awhile, you will benefit by following the people in his starter pack.

Afterwards, Dave Murray, David Mullen and I were chatting (via Twitter of course!) about how even the best list, leaves off so many interesting and unique personalities on Twitter. So without further explanation, we have put together a Twitter Hidden Gems list. This list is unique because it is full of incredible people from the Twitter commnity that are off the beaten path. Some of the best individuals one can hope to find.  We hope you find following them as valuable as we do.

  • Great list!

However, I'd love it if I knew WHY they were such hidden gems. What do they add to your Twitter stream?

I'd love to know or at least understand why you chose these 50. =)
  • My "gems" were chosen for the simple fact that I 1) learned from them 2)they have provided valuable insight and 3)they are simply great people to know. Whoever has made an impact with me was on my list - and there was room for plenty more!
  • Dave, You made me blush! Thank you for your vote of confidence! I have to send props back to you. I appreciate tweeps like you in my Twitter stream. You're one who has become a real friend and value-add to life!

I think this is really clever idea. My only suggestion would be to include each "gems" twitter bio. That's one of my biggest complaints about #followfriday - what good does a random list of names do me? I'm much more inclined to check out the pages of people with a description of their page and/or interests however brief.
  • Wow, a lot of these folks I didn't know. And thank's a lot for including me! Very much appreciate it!
  • Thanks for including me Ken!
  • Ari, my friend! One of the things I love about you is that you always look to go a step further.

I won't speak for Ken and Dave, but the thought was to uncover Twitter hidden gems based on their interactions on Twitter. I don't read the blogs of each of the fine Twitter folks I recommended. Some of them may not even have blogs. And, of course, if we were going to include links to blogs, some could say "why not include links to their Facebook pages and FriendFeed accounts and..." You get the picture. :)

All that to say, we stayed focused on recommending people we like connecting with on Twitter. Thanks for checking out the post!
  • Neat idea, but I spy an immediate problem. What of their blogs? For instance, Erika Napoletano and Rosy Villa are twitterheads for sure, but they're also great bloggers. Why force someone to click their profiles and then onto their blog links?
  • Ari, one of the things I like about you is being able to take an idea and make it even better. As David pointed out, we were focused primarily on the Twitter interaction with these folks. While some may have good blogs to highlight, that wasn't our intent. Thanks for the suggestion. It is something to think about for next post like this.
